So how do you coexist with your pets without sacrificing the style of your new home?
We asked Design Manager of New Generation Homes, Peter Wilkinson, to show off his top tricks for pet proofing new homes to keep them looking on trend all year round.
“While rugs may be an obvious way to protect your flooring from scratches, many people think sacrificing cheap throwaway rugs is the way to go. Instead, simply choose a style that will best hide stains and hair, such as small-scale patterns in darker colours – they hide a multitude of pet sins.”
Choose the right couch
“Many cat owners will attest to their purring pet’s obsession for scratching their precious couches -but it doesn’t mean you have to make do with daggy sofas. Velvet upholstery looks great and doesn’t have looped thread, meaning your cat will have less to hook its claws onto.”
Zip-on cushion covers
“Pets love to sleep on your couches and beds, but that doesn’t mean you have to hide your chic cushions away from the world. Just make sure all your cushions have covers that can be easily removed and washed.”
“Many dogs will chew anything in sight! But by storing things in wall-mounted cabinets (a phenomenon known as fauxdenza – i.e. creating the look of an expensive credenza) is a great way to keep everything out of reach of terrorising teeth – and they look amazing!”
Colour match with your pet
“If you can’t beat ‘em, join 'em! When styling your home (flooring, blankets, sofas etc.) go for colours that are similar to those of your pets. They will hide shedded hair better, allowing you to cut down on the amount of time you spend cleaning.”
